Good to know
Below this article you will find the addresses of the places mentioned , as well as the link to the website or Facebook page.
Museums and cultural visits
Even when rain comes to Dinant, several cultural venues allow you to discover the history of the region while staying dry.
• The Museum of Medieval Life (Bouvignes)
Housed in the former Spanish House, this museum often surprises visitors. More intimate than the well-known sites in the center of Dinant , it offers a clear and thorough exploration of the medieval past of the Meuse Valley. An informative visit, ideal for those who like to take their time indoors.
• The House of Pataphony:
A truly unique place, tucked away on a small street in the city center. Here, music isn't limited to traditional instruments: repurposed objects, unusual materials, interactive installations… everything becomes a source of surprising sounds. It's a playful and poetic experience, enjoyed by children and adults alike.
• The House of Monsieur Sax:
A small museum space dedicated to Adolphe Sax, inventor of the saxophone and an emblematic figure of Dinant . The visit is quick, but it allows you to learn more about the man behind the instrument… while staying dry.
• The Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame in Dinant
It's impossible to miss its bulbous bell tower. The interior is well worth a visit: stained-glass windows, an impressive nave, and a peaceful atmosphere, just a stone's throw from the Meuse River. An ideal refuge when the weather turns bad.
• The castles of the region
The dinant has several remarkable castles.
-
Freyr , with its terraced gardens and elegant lounges (closed in winter).
-
Vêves , one of the most beautiful fortified castles in Belgium.
-
Lavaux-Sainte-Anne is known for its museum, collections, and indoor spaces accessible year-round.
While some outdoor areas are subject to the weather, the interiors offer a comfortable visit even in rainy conditions.
Iconic tours with an umbrella
Some of the region's must-see attractions remain perfectly accessible even when the sky is overcast. With a coat and an umbrella, you can explore iconic landmarks while enjoying their indoor spaces.
• The Citadel of Dinant
Perched above the Meuse River, the Citadel houses several exhibition halls retracing the region's military history, from the Middle Ages to modern conflicts. The interior is easily accessible, and the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of soldiers in different eras. The exterior view remains impressive even between showers.
• Maredsous Abbey:
About twenty minutes from Dinant , Maredsous offers a peaceful retreat where you can spend several hours exploring the abbey , discovering local crafts, and enjoying a meal on site . The site also hosts occasional events throughout the year, such as themed markets (Provençal market, Christmas market, etc.), activities, and family days. A pleasant outing, even under a grey sky.
• A cruise on the Meuse River
: When operating, a cruise is still possible even in rainy weather. The boats are covered, allowing you to admire the Meuse landscapes without worrying about the weather. A peaceful way to enjoy the valley, comfortably seated inside.
• The Citadel of Namur and its underground passages
Further downstream on the Mesue River, the Citadel of Namur offers a guided tour of its restored underground passages: a fascinating network of galleries where visitors can walk completely sheltered. The site also houses the Guy Delforge perfumery, located in part of the buildings, where visitors can discover the different stages of perfume creation.
Gourmet experiences in the comfort of your own home
It's difficult to choose, given the many options in and around Dinant . Whether you're looking for a meal, a beer tasting experience, or simply a drink in a welcoming atmosphere, several places offer a pleasant and enjoyable experience.
To eat
For a selection of good restaurants in Dinant , you can refer to our dedicated article, which offers some recommended addresses for lunch or dinner in Dinant according to your current desires.
Have a drink
Several iconic cafes offer a dry place to take a break while enjoying a relaxed dinantatmosphere. We'll limit ourselves to mentioning three, particularly appreciated for their setting and beer selection (we are in Belgium, let's not forget):
-
La Capsule , on the Croisette: a varied selection of beers and a relaxed atmosphere.
-
Café Saint-Roch , housed in one of the city's oldest buildings (and the oldest private residence), boasts a fine selection of local and specialty beers. While not on the Croisette, this café is definitely worth a visit.
-
Café Leffe , located a stone's throw from the Collegiate Church, offers an unobstructed view of the Meuse River and the option to eat (very good). A great place if you want to drink a Leffe beer.
If you prefer wine, treat yourself to Les Restanques 2 Houx , which is a wine bar, a restaurant, and a wine shop all in one. The majority of the wines on offer are French.
Discover (and taste) Maison Leffe
Housed in the former Bethlehem convent, the Leffe House offers a museum tour that retraces the history of the famous beer. The visit naturally culminates in a tasting, always a welcome treat when the weather is unpredictable. Leffe hasn't been brewed in Dinantfor a long time, but this place remains a must-see for many visitors to the city.
Visit the Caracole Brewery (Falmagne)
A unique place in the region: the brewing tanks are still heated by wood fire, using a traditional method that makes this brewery special. Several beers are produced on site. The visit is friendly and full of discoveries. To learn more, you will find a complete article dedicated to the Caracole craft brewery on our website.
Sweet treats and delicacies
For an afternoon snack or a sweet treat, Solbrun , located near the Collegiate Church, is well worth a visit. Those with a serious sweet tooth should almost avoid going in: the waffles, crepes, and pastries are incredibly tempting… and some tables even offer a lovely view of the Meuse River.
Near the Charles de Gaulle bridge, the Kempinaire bakery has a small but comfortable tasting room. You can sample the pastries on offer, and a sandwich service is also available.
Located a little outside the city center, Boulangerie Saint-Jacques also welcomes you with a tasting room. The selection of pastries is smaller, but the quality and taste are excellent. Light meals (filled sandwiches) are available in a pleasant setting. Parking is easier here than in the city center. You'll also find some excellent sourdough bread. A well-known and popular spot among the Dinant .
In each of these three locations, you can take home delicious edible souvenirs of your visit. Or something to extend the gourmet experience back at the cottages.
Local specialties: flamiche and couque from Dinant
It is impossible to talk about Dinant and its gastronomy without mentioning two emblematic specialties.
Dinant Flamiche
: This cheese tart, typical of the region, is best enjoyed warm. It can sometimes be found in bakeries, depending on the day of production or the season. If you see one in a shop window, don't hesitate: it's a simple and delicious specialty, rarely offered outside the dinant . It's best to avoid counting calories while enjoying this treat. We've dedicated an article to the famous Dinant , a must-try of local gastronomy and folklore.
• The Dinant
: Almost as hard as wood, decorated, and made entirely of honey and flour, the couque is a must-try. The couque is a biscuit that you suck on (you won't be able to bite into it). Excellent for endurance athletes.
To buy some or simply admire the different sculpted designs, Maison Jacobs —located between the Collegiate Church and the Town Hall—remains a top choice. You can also find them at Solbrun , which offers a fine selection and sometimes smaller sizes, perfect for a quick snack. We've even decorated the entrance hall of our guesthouses with a few of these cookies: they're there purely for decoration.
Relaxing activities
If the weather does not allow you to stay outside for long, several options are available to you to enjoy a relaxing moment in the region.
• Ciney Municipal Swimming Pool:
About fifteen minutes away by car, the Ciney indoor swimming pool offers the opportunity to swim or simply spend some time in the warmth, sheltered from the rain. It also has a hammam and a sauna, which are usually open (but not always).
• Spas in Dinant
In the city center, establishments like L'Institut by Lou or Cocoon et Vous offer massages, facials, and wellness breaks. A simple and affordable way to relax between sightseeing.
• Wellness centers in the region
If you'd like to explore other relaxation options, Explore Meuse lists several wellness centers and spas located around Dinant . The list is varied, allowing you to choose according to your current desires.
And if you stay nice and dry at the cottage
Rain can also be an invitation to slow down a little. We're not going to suggest you spend the afternoon in front of the television, even though each cottage has one. There are other options available to help you enjoy a quieter moment.
You'll find a few books and comics (mostly in French) as well as a deck of cards, perfect for playing with family or friends. A few board games are also available.
In The Little Kangaroo , a PlayStation with several games can keep you entertained on the big screen.
In The Great Kangaroo , a few puzzles await those who enjoy a more patient activity.
And then there is the Meuse and the garden… From the cottages, it is possible to simply contemplate the river, observe the garden or the ballet of the birds.
Several of our guests tell us they spend time watching the river. We understand them: it's a simple and relaxing way to enjoy their stay, especially when the weather invites you to take a break.
Dinant, a welcoming region whatever the weather
We hope, however, that the weather will be at least partially kind to you during your stay in our cottages, so that you can still visit the town and the surrounding area without needing an umbrella.
Because there is no shortage of outdoor activities either, depending on the seasons of course.
From rock climbing in Freyr for climbing enthusiasts to the numerous hikes in the Lesse valleys, there are plenty of options. And let's not forget water sports like kayaking and water skiing.
