What is a gîte in Wallonia?
A gîte, according to the regulatory definition in Wallonia, is furnished accommodation intended for short-term tourist stays. To be officially recognized, these accommodations must meet strict criteria set out in the Walloon Tourism Code.
The unique feature of a self-catering cottage is that it allows you to occupy living spaces in a completely autonomous and independent. Unlike a hotel room, you are not subject to mealtime restrictions and you have the necessary space to prepare your own meals. You are therefore entirely free to set your meal times as you wish. And you can be certain that any dietary restrictions will be accommodated.
In a way, you feel right at home in a gîte. You can have breakfast whenever you like, with whatever food you choose… and in whatever clothes you like! A stay in a gîte is a holiday defined by freedom!
This type of tourist accommodation offers the least flexibility in scheduling. In return, you prepare your own meals. It's an ideal way to spend a holiday with friends, family, or as a couple. It's also a perfect solution for exploring a region, staying in accommodation that immerses you in your holiday surroundings.
Our approvals and quality labels: urban gîte
The Walloon Tourism Code identifies several types oflocal accommodation : rural gîte, urban gîte, bed and breakfast, holiday rentals… to name just a few.
The use of any of these designations is subject to prior authorization. While any accommodation can be called "Gîte", official authorization is required to advertise itself as "Gîte rural" or "Gîte urban".
Gîtes Kangourou Dinant benefit from this official recognition and are classified as " Gîte Citadin".
Beyond a protected designation of origin, this implies compliance with precise regulations. These regulations thus establish
- Criteria include equipment (kitchen, bathroom, etc.), the number of living rooms, and the size of the bedrooms. For example, an extra bed in a living room is not the same as a bed in a bedroom.
- quality standards (for reception, …)
- fire safety standards .
Since 2023, it is also necessary to obtain a planning certificate from the municipality.
Finally, the operator of a gîte is required to take out civil liability insurance.
At Gîtes Kangourou Dinant, we have chosen to meet these regulatory requirements in order to offer you a safe holiday accommodation, tailored to your needs and compliant with the regulations in force in Wallonia. Through this process, we submit to an external inspection carried out by the General Tourism Commission and the Regional Fire Service.
For more detailed information on this recognition procedure, please refer to the website of the General Tourism Commission.
Fire safety standards
Obtaining a fire safety certificate is essential to obtain official recognition as a local accommodation.
To be recognized as an urban guesthouse, we applied for and obtained the fire safety certificate. Issued by the Mayor, it is conditional upon a positive assessment of the fire safety measures carried out by a fire prevention officer.
Among the main requirements to be met, we should mention:
- The presence of a fire extinguisher on each level of the dwelling. This device must comply with current regulations and be subject to annual inspection.
- The presence of a fire blanket in each kitchen.
- certification of the electrical and gas installations.
The house therefore has four fire extinguishers, one per floor. Each of the two kitchens has a fire blanket.
In the Kangourou cottages, we have also placed a carbon monoxide detector in the bathroom, due to the presence of a gas boiler.
Finally, two improvements help to enhance the safety of our guests:
- Each of the two cottages has two escape routes to the outside;
- The entrance hall is divided into sections and a fire door has been placed at the entrance to the Petit Kangourou gîte.
Of course, all these measures are taken as a preventative measure.
